Speaker Grants Urgent Question To NI Sec Tomorrow On NI Protocol

Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle has granted an urgent question tomorrow from Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Louise Haigh to her gov't counterpart Brandon Lewis on the gov'ts legal obligations under the Northern Ireland protocol in the Withdrawal Agreement between the UK and the EU.

  • The rumours emerging this weekend, that the UK could seek to rewrite sections of the WA unilaterally to avoid customs checks between NI and GB in the event the UK ends the Brexit transition period without a new FTA, have caused significant consternation in Brussels (see 'MNI Exclusive: UK/EU Talks Could Implode If Johnson Breaks WA').
  • UQ likely to come around 1230BST, after which Health Sec. Matt Hancock will deliver a statement on the coronavirus. Comes a day after the UK recorded its highest new 24hr caseload since May on September 6.
