Speaker McCarthy Meets Taiwan President Tsai In California

US-CHINA

MNI London: House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has met Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen at the Ronald Reagan hotel in Simi Valley, California.

  • McCarthy becomes the highest ranking US official to meet with a Taiwanese president on US soil since the US established diplomatic relations with Beijing in 1979.
  • Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh is scheduled to brief the press at 14:00 ET 19:00 BST and may provide an update on any Chinese military response to the meeting. Livestream: LINK
  • White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre will also brief the press at 14:00 ET 19:00 BST: LINK
  • Jean-Pierre is expected to urge Beijing to refrain from using the visit as grounds for expanding military maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait, similar to those conducted in the weeks following former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) trip to Taiwan last year.
  • Jean-Pierre will also stress that Congress is a co-equal and independent branch of government over which the White House has no authority although that is unlikely to placate Beijing.
