Speakers today

BOE

Today we will hear again from Dave Ramsden (8:10GMT) as well as a speech from Haskel on UK inflation (text at 13:00GMT).

  • Overnight Ramsden appeared on a panel with ECB's de Cos and he is reported to have said that UK inflation has become "homegrown" and that it will take two years to get back to target (which is in line with the Bank's November MPR which had CPI back at the 2% target in Q4-25). He is due to appear again this morning on Bloomberg TV at 8:10GMT. His communications overnight seemed to be in line with the wider MPC's message of rates being restrictive for an "extended period" - we will be watching for whether he also signals that risks are to the upside in his TV appearance this morning.
  • We will also hear from Haskel (13:00 text to be released, 17:00 speech delivered with Q&A, ). His speech is entitled "UK inflation: how did we get here and where are we going?" His message along with the rest of the MPC who testified ahead of the TSC last week was regarding risks being to the upside - so it will be interesting if he presents any projections that differ at all from the central MPR forecasts - or if he simply refers back to those forecasts.
  • We don't really expect Ramsden's comments to impact the SONIA / gilt opens too much - but both Ramsden's TV appearance and Haskel's speech have the potential to be market moving events today.
