Star Reports That Malaysian PM Anwar Could Reshuffle Cabinet Tomorrow

ASIA

The Star reports that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim may reshuffle his Cabinet tomorrow following much speculation that it could take place before the end of this year, with the leader looking to fill the vacant post of the Minister of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living.

  • The Prime Minister has been playing cat and mouse with the media, fuelling and playing down speculation surrounding the potential political shakeup. Anwar deflected a reporter's question about the possible reshuffle over the weekend. Just a few days earlier, the PM told TV3 that it was impossible to "make a fair assessment" of the Cabinet's performance after just one year, despite earlier jokingly alluding to a potential reshuffle by the end of the year.
  • "Highly placed sources" told the Star that "an official announcement will be made before the swearing-in at 3pm". The report noted that "several ministries will be affected" but was otherwise frugal on details.
  • As a reminder, Anwar needs to fill the post of the Minister of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living after it has been left vacant due to the death of Salahuddin Ayub in July, with Armizan Mohd Ali taking up the portfolio in caretaker capacity.
  • Armizan Mohd Ali told the media that the Cabinet did not discuss a reshuffle at its meeting last week but he thinks that "the Prime Minister mentioned in Putrajaya that there will be a reshuffle before 2024".
