SOUTH AFRICA: Steenhuisen Talks About DA's Red Lines, Future Of GNU

SOUTH AFRICA

Unsurprisingly, the initial round of questions from reporters attending the DA's presser focuses on the future of the GNU and the DA's red lines. Federal Leader John Steenhuisen starts his answer by noting that "there is no point of being in government if you can't govern," but then repeatedly reiterates that he hopes to find a way to improve the terms of cooperation with the ANC.

  • "I believe that we could have quite easily found a way through that particular impasse" [surrounding the Expropriation Act]. "My party is right asking questions of me - was this being discussed in the GNU?"
  • "The voters in South Africa took the ANC's majority away from them." Says the current government is not simply an extension of the previous administration - that something was done by the previous administration does not imply that it should be automatically continued.
  • Steenhuisen on whether the DA has approached the point of considering GNU exit: "Have we reached that point yet? No. (...) But if this trend continues (...) then there really is no point in us being here."
  • "When will we leave? When the constitution is crashed. When the economy is crashed. (...) We will make it very clear when it happens."
