Study Cmte Chair Hern: House Vote On Debt Ceiling Plan As Early As Next Week

US

Chad Pegram at Fox News has reported comments from House Study Committee Chair Kevin Hern (R-OK) stating that a House vote on the GOP debt ceiling proposal - expected to be unveiled by House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) today - could come as soon as next week.

  • Hern: “I've been in probably no less than a dozen meetings, probably twice as many calls... We keep saying the same thing over and over. It's time to call the question.”
  • Hern: “We can have the conversation, give a 72 hour notice and go through the rules package and have this on the floor before we leave next Friday.”
  • A successful vote on the proposal could force President Biden to the negotiating table but failure to pass the bill could significantly weaken the position of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).
  • Hern acknowledged this dilemma, saying: “If we can't lead, then we have a problem... We've been talking about this for 89 days. In the business world, you would no longer be leading your company if it took you 89 days to talk about the obvious.”
