Sturgeon: COVID-19 Cases Up But Little Link To Hospitalisations

SCOTLAND

BBC's Lewis Goodall tweets a thread on statement from First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on COVID-19 cases in Scotland:

  • "Sturgeon: case numbers have increased by more than a quarter in Scotland in the last week. Doubled from where they were in early party of May. Largest daily increase since late March. R could be as high as 1.3- driven largely by Glasgow. But concentrated in younger age groups- indicates vaccines working for the old. Numbers in hospital have increased from around 60 to 90. But in January there were more than 2000. Seems likely vaccines at v least significantly weakening link between cases and hospital. FM says that most of mainland Scotland due to move to Level 1 on 7th June. Says she'll confirm to Parliament on Tuesday whether that will go ahead."
  • Sturgeon says that Glasgow will remain in level 3 restrictions (no indoor household mixing or hospitality), with the potential to move to level 2 by end of next week.
  • Most recent ONS data on number of COVID-19 cases as proportion of the population in each nation of the UK: Wales: 1 in 3,859 residents have COVID-19, England: 1 in 1,120, N. Ireland: 1 in 820, Scotland: 1 in 630
