Summer Air Travel Season Started Strongly: IATA

The post-covid air travel demand recovery gathered further momentum in June, according to IATA.

  • •Globally, total air passenger traffic is now 94.2% of pre-pandemic levels, and H1 2023 is up 47.2% on the previous year.
  • •Domestic traffic in June rose 27.2% compared to June 2022 and was 5.1% above June 2019 levels. International traffic still lags somewhat, up 33.7% versus 2022, but still 12% below pre-pandemic levels of June 2019. International traffic for H1 2023 was up 58.6% on the year.
  • •“As strong as travel demand has been, arguably it could be even stronger. Demand is outrunning capacity growth, said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, adding that infrastructure bottlenecks in the aviation industry are holding back further capacity growth.
