Support For NATO Membership Continues To Climb: Poll

FINLAND

Latest opinion polling from Yle shows Finnish public support for NATO membership reaching new highs. Of the 1,378 respondents interviewed from 9-11 March, 62% were in favour of joining the defensive alliance, 16% were opposed, and 21% said that they did not know. This marks a signiificant change from the previous week, when 52% were in favour and 28% opposed.

  • For decades, the Finnish public has been largely opposed to NATO membership. A Yle poll in 2017 found just 21% in favour of joining the alliance. The shift is coming from across the political spectrum. While supporters of the socialist Left Alliance are the most opposed to NATO membership, both Left Alliance and Centre Party voters have shifted in greater numbers towards advocating joining.
