Support For Work Requirements May Undermine Democrat 14th Amendment Push

US

Axios has published areportshowing, “Nearly two-thirds of Americans — including half of Democrats — back work requirements for Medicaid and [SNAP] benefits, as House Republicans want in a debt limit deal.”

  • The findings may undermine the position of progressive Democrats who are calling on the White House to pursue a unilateral strategy, invoking the 14th Amendment, to raise the debt limit and avoid signing off a Republican-leaning bipartisan deal.
  • WaPo reports that Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), chair of Congressional Progressive Caucus, said yesterday the vast majority of its members supported invoking the 14th Amendment rather than making concessions to Republicans.
  • Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said: “Use the 14th Amendment. That’s the solution to this crisis. You do not, at this moment in history, balance the budget, if you like, on the backs of the most vulnerable people."
  • The White House has studied the 14th Amendment strategy but are reportedly “deeply uneasy" about its legality.
