SWEDEN OCT CONSUMER CONFIDENCE 48.3; SEP 52.1r

  • The Swedish Economic Tendency indicator dived over 6 points in October to the lowest since July 2020. Overall demand contracted, and employment expectations fell.
  • Retail and service sectors led the broad-based decline on the back of negative consumer demand outlooks and weak tourism services.
  • Only building and manufacturing sector confidence remains above historical averages.
  • The consumer confidence indicator recorded a 3.8-point slide, falling to historical lows across almost all sub-indexes. 12-month expected inflation softened to 11.1%, albeit remaining alarmingly high.
  • The Riksbank surprised with an outsized 100bp hike in September to 1.75%, signalling continued increases over the next 6 months as the Swedish economy battles surging inflation (+10.8% y/y in September) and a weak krona.
