Swedish Ambassador Says US Senate Must Be 'Speedy' On NATO Application

NATO

Swedish Ambassador to the United States Karin Olofsdotter speaking at an event hosted by the Washington Post says that Sweden hasn't yet made a decision on whether or not to join NATO but strongly hints that an application is imminent.

  • Olofsdotter says that the Russian invasion of Ukraine fundamentally changed the way Sweden views the security architecture of Europe.
  • The event is ongoing and can be followed here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/washington-post-liv...
  • Olofsdotter says that the United States Senate should be 'speedy' when it comes to approving the Swedish application. 'If there is anyone in the Senate watching, you will see me and my Finnish counterpart walking the halls of Congress soon if we decide to join' .
  • Olofsdotter stresses that the decision remains to be made but an ideal timeline would be before the senate goes on recess in August to diminish the time when Sweden is vulnerable before full membership.
  • Yesterday Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and says that Blinken gave Sweden 'security assurances' on NATO membership.
