Swedish Investigation Says Nord Stream Explosion Was 'Sabotage'

NATURAL GAS

An investigation from Swedish authorities has stated that the explosion that damaged both the Nord Stream I and Nord Stream II natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea in September was caused by 'gross sabotage'.

  • Lead prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist stated that “the analysis showed residue of explosives on several of the foreign objects that were found.”
  • EU nations have implied that Russia is responsible for the act, while Russia has denied this and laid the blame at the feet of the British Royal Navy for carrying out the attack. London has refuted the allegations, saying they are simply Moscow attempting to divert attention from significant military setbacks in its invasion of Ukraine.
  • Following the incident, the nations in the Baltic/North Sea area with significant hydrocarbon infrastructure, notably Norway, have sought to shore up their defences from sabotage with an increased military presence at vulnerable sites.
