POWER: Swiss Hydro Stocks Fell to 35.8% of Capacity Last Week

Swiss hydropower reserves last week – calendar week 4 – declined by 4.8 percentage points on the week to 35.8% of capacity, slightly narrowing the deficit to 2024 levels and the five-year average, BFE data showed. 

  • Stocks declined by 5.8 points the week prior.
  • Reserves narrowed the deficit to the five-year average to 17.2 points, compared with 17.9 points the week before.
  • The deficit to the ten-year average also narrowed to 12.7 points, compared with 13.1 points the week prior.
  • Stocks were 22.1 points below 2024 levels, compared with 23.8 points the week before.
  • Power demand in Switzerland decreased to 8.2GW last week, down from 8.57GW the week before.
  • The L'Ecreuleuse measuring point saw 118cm of new snowfall in the last seven days with current snow height at 256cm on 28 January, White Risk data showed.
  • Precipitation in the hydro-intensive region of Sion, in canton Valais, last week totalled 14.7mm, below the 30-year normal of 22.3mm.
  • Looking ahead, the latest Bloomberg 6-10 day ECMWF weather forecast for Sion suggested precipitation to rise this week to total 41.6mm, compared with the seasonal average of 22.3mm.
  • Mean temperatures in Zurich this week are forecast between -0.6C and 6.2C, with temperatures above the seasonal average for the first half of the week, before falling below the average.
  • The latest Swiss hydro balance is forecast to end this week at -2.93TWh, with the balance further narrowing to end at -3.63TWh on 12 February.
