Swiss Hydro Stocks Fell, Widened Surplus to Average

ELECTRICITY

Swiss hydropower reserves declined last week by 2.7 percentage points to 83.7% of capacity as of 27 November but further widened the surplus to the five-year average, BFE data showed.

  • Stocks widened the surplus to the five year average by one point on the week to 6.8 points – the highest level since early June. The surplus over the long-term average – since 1997 – also widened to 10.5 points, from 10 points the week before.
  • Hydropower was unchanged on the week, Entso-E data showed.
  • Forecasts suggest high precipitation in the region of Sion – in the hydro-intensive canton of Valais – for the remainder of this week. But temperatures below zero mean precipitation is going to fall in form of snow, limiting inflows into reserves.
