MNI BRIEF: EC Chief Signals Flexibility On Green Transition
MNI (LONDON) - The European Commission will be taking a more "flexible and pragmatic" approach to the green transition, its President Ursula von der Leyen said at a press conference today.
While the final decarbonisation goals of the EU would remain "cast in stone", von der Leyen said that the EC would adapt its course in order to achieve its green deadlines "better and faster". The comments follow the release of the Commission's "Competitiveness Compass" today in which the EC promised to reduce the complexity of its green legislation and to make it simpler and more business friendly, particularly for SMEs.
A strong political backlash against what is seen as excessive environmental regulation by the Commission has emerged since the EU Parliament elections last summer and the election of President Donald Trump in the US. On Feb 12, MNI will speak to ECB Executive Board member Frank Elderson on green issues and monetary policy. For registration click dm
