Swiss Hydro Stocks Saw First Fall in Over 4 Months

ELECTRICITY

Swiss hydropower reserves declined by 0.7 percentage points last week to 86.7% of capacity as of 2 October, marking the first week-on-week decline in stocks since late April, driven by low precipitation which limited inflows into reserves, BFE data showed late last night.

  • Stocks narrowed the surplus to the five-year average to 0.6 points, down from 1.9 points the week earlier. The surplus to the long-term average since 1997 also narrowed to 0.2 points, down from 0.5 points a week earlier. Stocks switched back to a surplus in the week prior.
  • Reserves declined at the fastest rate in the canton of Ticino, by 0.8 points to 83.5% of capacity.
  • Hydropower output last week edged higher week on week. Output from reservoirs rose by 119MW on the week to 1.83GW.
  • Forecasts for Sion, in the hydro-intensive canton of Valais, suggest little precipitation for the remainder of this week which could further limit inflows into reserves.
