Swiss Hydro Stocks Saw Sharpest Decline Since End Jan

Swiss hydropower reserves declined by 5.2 percentage points last week to 78.6% of capacity as of 4 December, marking the fastest decline since end January, BFE data showed.

  • Stocks narrowed the surplus to the five-year average to 4.8 points, compared with 6.8 points the week prior.
  • The surplus to the long-term average since 1997 also narrowed by 1.5 points to 9 points last week.
  • Hydropower output in Switzerland increased last week. Output from reservoirs rose by 803MW on the week to 2.16GW. Pumped storage production rose by 469MW to 1.27GW, Entso-E data showed.
  • Weather forecast in the hydro-intensive region of Sion – canton Valais – suggest precipitation wit temperatures above the freezing point for the end of the week, which could support some inflows into reserves.
