Taipei Boosts Funding To Lithuania As Vilnius-Beijing Spat Intensifies

Politico reports that Taipei has pledged an additional USD1bn credit fund to Lithuania as the Baltic state remains locked in an intensifying war of words with Beijing over Vilnius' recognition of Taiwan.

  • Politico reports that "The initiative came just days after Taipei announced a $200 million fund to invest in strategic sectors in Lithuania, which is facing a full trade embargo from Beijing. Reacting furiously to warming ties between Vilnius and Taipei, China is not only blocking Lithuanian goods but also products from other EU states that use Lithuanian-made components."
  • The row erupted in 2021 when Lithuania opened a representative office in Taiwan. The move was swiftly met by trade sanctions from Beijing, which staunchly opposes any outside recognition of Taiwanese independence.
