Taiwan President-US House Speaker Meeting Would Be A Severe Provocation

US-CHINA

(MNI Australia) Headlines have crossed from China's Taiwan Affairs Office that any meeting between Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and US House Speaker McCarthy would be a severe provocation and represent a violation of the one-China principle. Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian added that China would definitely respond if such a meeting occurred.

  • The spokesperson added that the US should not have any official contact with Tsai.
  • This comes ahead of Tsai's expected stop overs in the US on her way to South America. She is expected to be in NY on March 29-30, and then stop in Los Angeles a week later, where the meeting with McCarthy could take place.
  • The China Taiwan Office Affairs Spokesperson didn't outline what China's response would be, but markets will recall the large-scale military exercises China undertook in the aftermath of Pelosi's trip to Taiwan last year.
  • Earlier it was also reported that US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan spoke to China's top diplomat Wang Yi last Friday. A call between US President Biden and China President Xi Jinping is yet to be scheduled.
