UK: The government has released its emergency COVID-19 legislation, set to go
through parliament in the coming days.
- The bill will give the gov't the legal capacity to enact severe measures to
try to control the virus including; allowing the police to detain those
suspected of having the virus that are not self-isolating; closing airports;
closing schools (or indeed keeping them open); allow court proceedings to go
ahead via videolink; allow the gov't to ban events or mass gatherings; allow
retired NHS staff to return and to work more than 16 hours in a week.
- There is not expected to be any significant opposition to this bill, with it
going through 'on the nod' (i.e. without a formal vote).
