US: The imposition USD3.1bn of new tariffs on EU and UK products (see 1018BST
and 1019BST bullets) comes in the same week as the EU and China held a bilateral
leaders summit. 
- The imposition of tariffs comes as part of an ongoing saga related to EU
subsidies for French aircraft manufacturer Airbus and US support for Boeing,
both of which have been criticised by the WTO.
- Compared to previous tariffs imposed on other major trading nations the amount
is relatively small, but acts as a signal of intent to the EU (and indeed the
UK) that closer links with Beijing could have negative trade implications
elsewhere.
