CHINA: The move last night from the US gov't to label four more Chinese news
outlets - China Central Television, the China News Service, the People's Daily
and the Global Times - as foreign missions rather than independent news
providers has sparked an immediate diplomatic backlash from Beijing. This
follows a move from the US in February that saw five other outlets given the
same designation.
- Foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the move highlighted "hypocrisy"
from the US with regards to "freedom of the press".
- Zhao went on to say "We urge the US to stop acting with this Cold War
prejudice otherwise China will have to make a necessary response".
- Sino-US relations have reached a multi-year low. Nevertheless, advisers on
both sides scrambled several hours ago to deny claims that the China-US trade
deal was "over" following comments from US trade adviser Peter Navarro (see
0315BST bullet).
