CHINA DATA: The Purchasing Manufacturers Index (PMI) gauging the performance of
the steel sector softened to an eight-month low in December due to weak demand
during the holiday season, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing
(CFLP) said Tuesday. The headline index dropped to 50.2 in December, 2.9
percentage points lower than the November reading, the CFLP noted, adding that
it was the eighth consecutive month that manufacturing sentiment has been above
the 50 mark, which separates expansion from contraction. Steel prices are
expected to rebound after the Chinese New Year because of robust domestic
investment and enhanced production restrictions due to environmental protection
regulations, the CFLP argued.
