CHINA: The U.S. should treat Chinese companies equally in the area of protecting
intellectual properties (IP), Hu Wenhui, the spokesman of China's National
Intellectual Property Administration (NIPA), said at a briefing on Tuesday,
commenting on the U.S. suspending a WTO dispute over China's treatment of IP
rights until end-2019.
- The steady increase of patents filed by foreigners in China shows the
international community's confidence in China's IP protection, Hu said, citing
data that foreigners filed 78,000 patents in China in the first half, 8.6% rise
y/y.
- China has granted 238,000 patents in H1, a rise of 9.9% y/y, compared to the
2.9% gain in 2018, according to NIPA data. The number of patents filed dropped
9.4% y/y to 649,000 as China encourages more "high-quality" intellectual
properties, Hu said.
