Thomas-Greenfield To Take Hard Line On China At Congressional Hearing

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield is testifying before the US House of Representatives Appropriations Committee on President Biden's Budget request for fiscal year '23.

• Thomas-Greenfield will take a hard line on Chinese and Russian obfuscation of the UN Security Council. Thomas-Greenfield wrote in her prepared statement: "...let me also be crystal clear: China and Russia are working day and night to drive an alternative, authoritarian agenda at the UN and other multilateral institutions. And they are putting significant resources and personnel behind these efforts. Right now, at the UN, to paraphrase President Biden, we are in a fight for the soul of the world."
• Thomas-Greenfield will say that without greater investment in the UN the US stands to lose credibility to shape the international security architecture.
• Thomas-Greenfield: "Currently, our failure to live up to our financial obligations at the UN gives our adversaries an easy talking point [and] we’re hearing it now from our friends, too."
• The hearing comes as the US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin arrives in Asia for a 10-day tour of the region to tackle waning US influence and defuse tensions with China and North Korea.
