Tighter COVID Restrictions Confirmed In Tokyo

JAPAN

PM Yoshihide Suga officially announced the raising of Tokyo's COVID-19 risk status, meaning that regional Governor Yuriko Koike can impose stricter lockdown measures for a month starting Monday 11 April.

  • Bars and restaurants will be forced to close earlier, attendance at large events will be capped at 5,000, while punishments for violators of rules will be more severe. The severity of lockdown restrictions remains well below the levels seen in Europe and other nations around the world experiencing spikes in cases.
  • Koike has been vocal about restricting travel in and around Tokyo during the Golden Week holiday in late April/early May to avoid spreading the virus further.
  • Suga also raised the threat level in Kyoto prefecture and in the Japan's southernmost archipelago of Okinawa.
