Tomorrow: Senate Hearing On Transparency In Petroleum Markets

April 5 -10:00 ET/15:00 BST : Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Chair of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, will convene a full committee hearing titled, 'Ensuring Transparency in Petroleum Markets.'

  • The hearing is the latest in an drive by Congress to find a legislative path out of overheating energy prices. President Biden has claimed that energy companies are benefiting from high energy prices and failing to invest adequately in new exploration and development of concessions.
  • The Committee statement reads: 'This hearing will examine steps Congress can take to protect consumers from excessive gas prices, including increasing transparency and ensuring the Federal Trade Commission has the tools and authority necessary to monitor wholesale markets and investigate suspicious trading practices.'
  • On April 6 the House Committee for Energy and Commerce will convene a hearing titled 'Gouged at the Gas Station: Big Oil and America's Pain at the Pump' to scrutinise the business practices of energy company CEOs.
