Conservative Party Chairman Oliver Dowden resigns in the wake of the Tories' defeats in two by-elections held Thursday.

  • Telegraph journalists tweets: Tory chairman quits over by-election losses in Tiverton and Honiton and Wakefield. He writes to PM: "We cannot carry on with business as usual. Somebody must take responsibility and I have concluded that, in these circumstances, it would not be right for me to remain in office."
  • PM Johnson earlier dismissed the idea that he could step down if his party loses the two elections as "crazy" but said he would be watching the polls with "interest."
