Trans Mountain Pipeline Variance Request Denied Prompting Further Possible Delays

OIL

The Canada Energy Regulator denied a request Tuesday from the Trans Mountain Expansion project to install a smaller diameter pipeline in a difficult section of the routing due to rock hardness.

  • The regulator said the request was denied via its website and an explanation would be provided as soon as possible.
  • At the November 27 hearing, Trans Mountain representatives said installing the smaller pipe would save 59 days of construction time and keep the project on track for a Q1 start date.
  • The project is designed to triple the volume of crude from Alberta to Canada’s pacific coast to 890,000 bpd.
  • The decision by the regulator widened the discount on Canadian crude to WTI according to Reuters.
  • The pipeline is 97% complete according to the company. The project is aiming to deliver Canadian crude at the end of March 2024 after being hit by numerous other delays.
