Treasury 'Campus' To Darlington, Teesside To Get Freeport Status

Reports in the UK press that as part of the upcoming Budget announcement, Chancellor Rishi Sunak will announce the creation of a new Treasury 'campus' in the town of Darlington, while the Teesside area will become a freeport, a move the gov't hopes will facilitate major investment in the region.

  • Both Darlington and Teesside are in the north-east of England and are represented by Conservative MPs that took seats from Labour as part of the demolition of the 'red wall' in the 2019 general election.
  • There has been heavy pressure on the gov't in Westminster to boost investment in the former Labour seats in order to deliver on the 'leveling up' agenda talked about so much during the campaign by PM Boris Johnson.
