MIDEAST: Trump Envoy In Qatar As Gaza Ceasefire Deal Sought Pre-20 Jan

MIDEAST

Steven Witkoff, a real estate mogul who is US President-elect Donald Trump's nominated Middle East envoy, is in Doha, Qatar for talks intended to try to reach a hostages-for-ceasefire deal in Gaza that could see the remaining Israeli hostages held by Hamas released prior to Trump's inauguration on 20 Jan. FT reports Witkoff "held talks with senior Qatari officials on Friday and has been liaising with members of Joe Biden’s administration and Israeli officials." Trump this week repeated his warning that there would be "hell to pay" if Hamas had not released all hostages by the time he returns to the White House.

  • Previously the Biden administration had been at pains to stress that the Trump transition team was not at the forefront of talks. However, this appears to have changed, with Witkoff saying on 7 Jan that the teams were “working in tandem” to try to reach a deal acceptable to Israel and Hamas.
  • A number of major issues remain unresolved, including confirming the number of hostages still alive and how many living hostages would be returned in the deal's first stage, and whether the IDF will be pulled back from the Philadelphi corridor along the Gaza-Egyptian border.
  • Earlier today, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz instructed the IDF to present a plan for the 'complete defeat of Hamas' if no hostage deal is reached by 20 Jan.
