Trump Firms In GOP Primary Odds With Further Criminal Charges Pending

Better markets have seen former President Donald Trump firm as favourite to take the Republican presidential nomination following last week's superceding indictment which saw additional charges of obstruction of justice added to his Department of Justice classified documents indictment.

  • According to Smarkets, Trump has an implied probability of 75.1% of taking the GOP nomination, up around 70% prior to the superceding indictment.
  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy are in a distant second and third place with 9.5% and 8.3% respectively.
  • Ramaswamy's recent rise in the Republican primary conversation is likely to due strong take-up amongst Trump's core base, which has seen him position himself favourably should Trump withdraw from the race.
  • An additional indictment from Department of Justice Special Council Jack Smith related to Trump's alleged attempts to subvert the 2020 presidential election is expected in the coming weeks, and an indictment from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis related to a phone call Trump made to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is expected before August 18.
