Trump May Be Losing Support Amongst Republicans

US

Former President Donald Trump's influence over the GOP appears strong than ever but there is a suggestion from GOP strategists that his popularity might be on the wane amongst Republican supporters.

  • Republican political strategist Sarah Longwell has that said there is increasing hesitancy amongst GOP focus groups about a second Trump bid for the White House. Longwell went on to say that focus group respondents didn't report as being 'anti-trump' merely that there was an increased appetite for a new face in 2024.
  • This suggests that polling data which gives Trump a significant lead over potential Republican challengers for 2024 may be overstating the strength of Trump's candidacy.
  • This comes as more focus is placed upon Florida governor Ron DeSantis as a potential GOP candidate in 2024. Trump and DeSantis have been engaged in a public 'feud' recently.
  • According to Amy Walter of the Cook Political Report DeSantis is now increasingly mentioned in Republican strategy as a credible candidate for 2024.
