Trump Speech To Close RNC Underway Shortly

US

Former President Donald Trump is shortly due to deliver his keynote speech to close the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Trump is expected to take the stage at around 22:30 ET 03:30 BST.LIVESTREAM

  • Trump said that he had "torn up" his prepared speech in favour of an address that would focus on unity in light of the assassination attempt: “This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would’ve been two days ago.”
  • Trump's son Eric Trump told CBS on Wednesday: “I think he’s changed his speech. … Went from a much tougher speech really prosecuting the administration for a lot of failures, for every failure that we know about that our country’s going through right now, to a very unifying speech, and I’m proud of that.”
  • Trump's speech will be buoyed by a favourable split-screen with the Democratic Party, currently engaged in a dispute over the viability of President Biden's candidacy.
  • Trump's Vice President nominee, JD Vance, used his keynote speech yesterday to make a direct pitch to the Rust Belt voters who will likely determine the election: “I promise you one more thing. To the people of Middletown, Ohio, and all the forgotten communities in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Ohio, and every corner of our nation: I promise you this — I will be a vice president who never forgets where he came from.”
