Trump Tweets Criticism Of NDAA With Veto Looming

WHITE HOUSE

President Trump tweets: "A provision is in the NDAA for the renaming, or even desecration, of National Monuments in National Parks. This is not what our Country wants!" followed by "GET TOUGH REPUBLICANS!"

  • Negotiators in Congress reached an agreement on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a USD740bn bill that would ensure military funding for the coming 12 months, yesterday but Trump has signaled he would be prepared to veto the legislation once it (almost certainly) passes in the House and Senate next week.
  • Trump has said that he would veto the legislation as it does not repeal 'Section 230', a clause from 1996 that gives immunity from civil liabilities to information service providers (in this case social media firms). Trump has said the section must be repealed to protect national security and US elections. Opponents have said that Trump wants to repeal the section so that he can launch one final attack on social media outfits before he leaves office in January.
  • Adding fuel to the fire are Trump's latest tweets regarding renaming national monuments, a hot-button cultural issue in the US following the BLM protests earlier this year.
