Truss Confirms Plan To Introduce Bill On NI Protocol 'In Coming Weeks'

EU-UK

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss speaks on the UK gov'ts plans regarding the future of the Northern Ireland protocol.

  • Truss: "The Belfast/Good Friday Agreement is under strain...this is because the NI Protocol does not have the support necessary in one part of the community in NI...east/west relationship is undermined by the protocol"
  • Truss: "UK has proposed what we believe to be a comprehensive and reasonable solution...would address frictions in east/west trade...The challenge is that this solution requires a change to the Protocol itself, as its current drafting prevents it from being implemented… but the EU’s mandate does not allow the Protocol to be changed.”
  • Truss: "I am announcing our intention to introduce legislation in the coming weeks to make changes in the protocol...[legisltation] will not break international law"
  • Truss: "Our preference remains a negotiated solution... we remain open to further talks."
  • Truss says 'this is not about scrapping the protocol'.
Language sounds much more conciliatory than previous gov't comments in recent days. Talking up dialogue w/EU.
