Truss, Sefcovic Release Joint Statement Following Talks

EU-UK

UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and EU Commission VP Maros Sefcovic have released a joint statement following their talks on the Northern Ireland protocol.

  • "Commission VP Sefcovic and UK Foreign Secretary Truss held their first meeting at Chevening 12-14 January. The meeting took place in a cordial atmosphere. They agreed that officials would meet next week in intensified talks and that the principals would meet again on 24 January. We share a desire for a positive relationship between the EU and the UK underpinned by our shared belief in freedom and democracy".
  • Statement does not show any progress, but is a change in tack, with statements when Lord Frost led talks delivered separately.
  • The resignation of Lord Frost from his position as Cabinet Office minsiter and the official leading UK talks with the EU over Brexit issues at the end of 2021 has led to a reorganisation of the UK gov'ts Brexit management strategy.
  • Simon Usherwood, Professor of Politics as the Open University has put together a useful graphic showing the new division of responsibilities for each of the major tasks in relation to talks with the EU.
