TTF Open Interest Rises to Highest of the Year

The TTF natural gas market is solidifying its role as a global benchmark according to Bloomberg with an increase in open interest.

  • ICE TTF natural gas futures and options open interest has risen to 2.78m contracts up almost 50% from the same time last year. Trading volume across both markets also surged by 50% from a year ago with daily aggregate futures traded volumes averaging 246k in Sep 2023 compared to 124k in Sep 2022.
  • Open interest for TTF futures is up to the highest of the year at 1.4m contracts and a 30% increase from the same period in 2022 while options interest has increased 77% to 1.3m contracts. TTF futures open interest is still below as much as 2m contracts seen in late 2021.
  • ICE doesn’t split volumes by geography, but the European market has become a popular destination for funds from Tokyo to Chicago according to Bloomberg.
  • Open interest in futures and options contracts tied to Asian LNG is growing at a slower pace, increasing by 10% from last year to 82.7k while volumes are up 7% on the year.
