TURKEY-British Trade Min Visits Istanbul As Upgraded Deal Sought

UK

UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Kemi Badenoch visits Istanbul on 5 Jan in an effort to push for an upgraded trading agreement between the UK and Turkey. At present, goods are covered by the bilateral trade deal, but services, digital and data are not.

  • The prospect of closer Anglo-Turkish trade relations comes just over a month since the two nations signed a joint statement of intent to bolster security cooperation. The prospect of Turkey purchasing Eurofighter jets from the UK and its EU partners while its air force still waits on approval to buy US F-16's, could open to the door to a more enhanced trade deal for the UK.
  • The visit comes as one of several Badenoch is expected to embark on in 2024, with the UK seeking to ink deals on services with Switzerland, South Korea, and a number of Gulf states this year. There is also the prospect that a deal could be reached with India on an FTA ahead of India's general election due in late spring. This would mark a notable coup for the UK gov't as it seeks to press its 'global Britain' agenda post-Brexit.
