Turkey Seeking Partial Gas Payment Deferral with Russia

Turkey has reportedly asked Russia to delay a portion of its gas payments to 2024.

  • Turkey has been struggling with soaring energy prices and a further collapse in the lira.
  • The request comes not long after Turkey has agreed with Russia to pay for 25% of its obligations in rubles rather than dollars.
  • Erdoğan said last month that he had discussed gas prices with Russian President Vladimir Putin and hoped to get a discount.
  • Hungary reached a deal with Gazprom on Monday to defer payments for winter gas supply.
