Two Significant Meetings On Nordic NATO Bids Today

NATO

Today will see two key meetings on the NATO accession plans of Sweden and Finland, before President Biden hosts Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö and Sweden’s Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson at the White House tomorrow.

  • 11:00 ET 16:00 BST: US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin will meet his Swedish counterpart Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist at the Pentagon.
  • 13:30 ET 18:30 BST: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will meet his Turkish counterpart Foreign Minister Melvut Cavusoglu in New York as part of the US-Turkey Strategic Mechanism.
  • Turkey remains the primary obstacle to Sweden and Finland's NATO aspirations. Earlier today Turkish President Recep Erdogan addressed a parliamentary group of his Justice and Development Party (AKP) and maintained his opposition to the Nordic accession plans citing support of Kurdish groups designated by Ankara as terrorists.
  • There may be an update on the results of these two meetings provided by State Department spokesperson Ned Price in a presser at 14:00 ET 19:00 BST.
  • Details of the presser can be found here: https://www.state.gov/todays-briefing-schedule/
