UAW Strike Set To Expand Today

US

A strike from United Auto Workers in Detroit is expected to expand today after union leaders and the Big Three automakers failed to deliver progress in negotiations.

  • The Washington Post reports that an expanded strike, "could exacerbate disruptions to an industry that makes up about 3 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product.”
  • Bloomberg reports: “General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Stellantis NV are bracing for more walkouts Friday as the carmakers remain far apart from the United Auto Workers on key issues...”
  • The strike is a delicate political issue in a critical swing state for the White House. President Biden has resisted sending advisors to Detroit despite a statement last week stating that he would dispatch acting Labor Secretary Julie Su to assist negotiations.
  • Rep Debbie Dingle (D-MI) cautioned against President Biden appearing at the picket line: "This is between the companies and the UAW. It's not about President Biden."
  • Former President Trump is expected to use a speech in Detroit next week, counterprogramming the second Republican Presidential debate, to burnish his blue collar credentials and criticse Biden's industrial agenda.
