UK December retail sales slow dramatically: CBI

UK DATA
MNI (London)
  • UK CBI reported retail sales plunged in December, with the reading for the month slowing to +8%, far below the forecasted +25% and a strong decline from November’s strong reading of +39% which looked optimistic with early Christmas shopping was well underway.
  • The emergence of the new Omicron covid variant and associated “Plan B” restrictions being reinforced in December caused the slowdown.
  • Sales expectations for January are +5%, reflecting a further dampening of confidence as retailers downgraded their outlooks, due to low demand and concerns of future covid-induced staff absences causing supply chains to come under (more) strain.
  • For now, inventory levels are being kept high with balances in the green for the first time since February this year, as firms aim to buffer for upcoming disruption.Source: CBI
