UK May Need More Gas Power Plants

The UK could need new gas-fired power plants amid the need for more baseload power, a study from the NEPC showed.

  • “There is a reasonable chance that we will need new gas-fired power stations”, Nilay Shah, professor at Imperial College and co-author of the report, said.
  • Shah said, however, new gas plants would need to be ready for the attachment of CCS technology, which could be achieved by location them near potential underground carbon storage sites.
  • The report also pointed out the need for more nuclear capacity beyond Hinkley Point C and rapid decisions on new nuclear capacity due to long lead times.
