UK PM Johnson to Meet w/Stoltenberg 10 Feb

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will visit Brussels on Thursday 10 February for talks with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. There will be a joint press conference streamed on the NATO websiteat 1045CET (0945GMT).

  • Discussion of Ukraine crisis the top priority. The UK has been supplying Ukraine with both defensive weaponry and training instructors for Ukrainian forces.
  • Writing in The Times yesterday, PM Johnson stated that UK support for Ukraine "will remain unconditional and immovable", and that the UK "would not flinch" if Russia invades Ukraine.
  • The UK gov't has stated that RAF aircraft and Royal Navy vessels could be deployed to the region in the event of a Russian invasion.
  • The UK has proved one of the most hawkish NATO members in relation to the Ukraine crisis, strongly supporting the US' hardline rhetoric towards Moscow. This is opposed to some NATO members from the EU such as France and notably Germany, that have sought a more diplomatic resolution to the crisis.
