EMISSIONS: UK/EU Delegates Urge Government to Relink ETS Systems

The EU and UK Parliamentary Partnership Assembly called on both governments in a letter dated 17 March to consider linking the EU and UK emissions trading system ahead of the UK-EU Summit in May.  

  • The UK-EU Summit is scheduled for 19 May 2025.
  • “Emphasises that cooperation on climate and energy policies would enable a
  • smoother green transition for both Parties, noting the urgency of the need to reach Net Zero. Calls on the UK and the EU to give serious consideration to linking the respective Emission Trading Schemes, as suggested in the TCA, and to work together to deepen renewable energy co-operation in the North Sea, including through the development of offshore wind”, the document showed.
  • Spencer Livermore, financial secretary to the Treasury, said last week, the EU and the UK are giving serious consideration to linking the two carbon markets, which caused a rally in UKAs.
