UKRAINE: Air Force Confirms Missile Attack, Could Be 1st-Ever Use Of ICBM In War

UKRAINE

The Ukrainian Air Force has confirmed that the city of Dnipro was hit by a missile attack earlier today, with an RBC Ukraine report adding to social media claims that Russia may have fired an RS26 two-stage intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) at the city. Unverified videos on social media show what appear to be six (non-nuclear) warheads striking Dnipro. If confirmed this would mark the first time in history that an ICBM has been launched as part of an active war, marking another escalation in the conflict (and a costly one for Russia at that). While this attack used conventional warheads, ICBM's would be the primary launch method of nuclear warheads.

  • The alleged firing of the ICBM comes after Ukraine for the first time fired US-made ATACMS and Anglo-French Storm Shadow long-range missiles into Russia on 19 and 20 Nov respectively.
  • After US President Joe Biden lifted restrictions on the use of ATACMS, Russia very publicly updated its 'nuclear doctrine', saying that an attack from a non-nuclear state if backed by a nuclear one would be treated as a joint assault on Russia.
  • The attack also comes a day after the US closed its embassy in Kyiv (sparking some other Western allies to do so as well) amid anticipation of a 'significant' attack. If remains to be seen whether this morning's ICBM attack is the one identified beforehand by the US.
