Ukraine and Moldova to Join Vertical Gas Corridor in Jan

Ukraine and Moldova are set to join a vertical corridor to allow flows of natural gas from Greece to Ukrainian storage in January 2024, sources told ICIS.

  • The Vertical Gas Corridor was first announced in 2016 by the gas grid operators of Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, and Austria. It allows for assets to be pooled across the region.
  • Greece is due to bring the Alexandroupolis FSRU online that will facilitate access to LNG imports for the region.
  • In the past, the Trans-Balkan pipeline used to transport Russian gas to the Balkans via Ukraine but has been largely idle since Gazprom diverted volumes via the TurkStream pipeline since 2020.
