Ukraine Deputy PM Svyrydenko Warns Black Sea Grain Deal At Risk

Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko has warned that the "Black Sea grain deal is under threat of halting," as Russia continues to prevent safe passage of vessels from Ukrainian ports.

  • EU top diplomat Josep Borrell tweeted yesterday: "The consequence of the war affect us all Russia is once again blocking 50 ships with urgently needed grain in the Black Sea. The EU supports UN efforts & will continue facilitating exports through the EU Solidarity Lanes..."
  • The Black Sea holdup comes as Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia struggle to reach an agreement on the transit Ukrainian grain, halted due to concerns over domestic markets.
  • Polish Agriculture Minister Robert Telus said today transit would be resumed on Friday but mechanisms will be put in place to, "ensure that not a single ton of grain will remain in Poland."
  • CEO of Ukrainian agribusiness HarvEast Dmitry Skornyakov said on the Black Sea deal: “For most farmers it’s not so critical now... but if it continues in the summer it will be very very challenging for us to survive.”
